An excellent quarter peal was rung on Friday afternoon 2nd October to commemorate the 125 years of submarine building in Barrow-in-Furness and the launch of Holland 1 (the first Royal Navy submarine) on 2nd October 1901. The BBC website has a good article about the Holland 1 submarine and the anniversary “Town marks 125 years of Navy submarine building“
The quarter peal was rung by a local ringers from Barrow and Dalton, and it was also significant because this was Jason’s first quarter as conductor.
Conducting a quarter peal requires considerable skill to ring their own bell while keeping track of the composition and order of all the bells to make vocal calls at precise moments to ensure no sequence of bells is repeated, and the bells only return to ring rounds (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8) at the end of the quarter peal.
This was a skill Jason had been learning on the ‘Advanced Conducting’ course taught by Simon Linford on the NW Ringing Course at Borwick Hall (near Carnforth) in the summer.
Congratulations also go to Rachel who had not rung Plain Bob Major to a quarter peal before.
